Works in stock Sir (Walter) Thomas Monnington, PRA (1902-1976) was a painter in oil and tempera of landscapes, figure subjects, portraits and later in life of some abstracts.  He was also a noted muralist. Born in London, he studied art at the Slade School 1918-23 and was Rome Scholar in Decorative Painting 1923-26. He exhibited at the Royal Academy extensively from 1931, and was elected ARA 1931, RA 1938 and to the office of President of the Royal Academy 1966. Monnington taught drawing at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools 1931-39 and in 1949 joined the staff of the Slade School. His work is represented in a number of public collections. Sir Thomas lived at Leyswood, Groomsbridge, near Tunbridge Wells, for many years and was knighted in 1967. A memorial exhibition was held at the Royal Academy in 1977.
