Watercolour and gouache, about 10.1 x 14.2 inches paper size; unframed

The painting is signed on the reverse 'D W Reed' '14557158' (his service number). It is titled and was priced at 3gns. Although not dated this wartime work is almost certainly from 1943 and as it was priced it may have been exhibited in the Carel Weight / Denis Reed show at the Charlotte Street Centre in London in November/December 1943. Please see my note below in regard to Denis Reed's wartime service. We have other works from this period, two of which have been illustrated with this listing (but are subject to separate sale on enquiry). Further images will be supplied on request.
'Denis Reed undertook farm work in Wiltshire and in Warwickshire before joining the Royal Engineers, Ordnance Survey section, who appreciated the skills offered by trained artists.  Reed served in the RE in Yorkshire, in Ruabon in North Wales (at Wynnstay Hall in 1943) and subsequently at Waddon in Croydon (1944).  He was later appointed Art Advisor to the London District of Army Education.  During his time at Ruabon he became friendly with Carel Weight and William Scott, and in company with other soldier artists at Ruabon, they had freedom to paint on a Sunday.  Weight was the prime mover in organising an exhibition of their pictures from Ruabon which were shown at the Charlotte Street Centre in the West End, a gallery opened by the Artists International Association.  This exhibition titled ‘After Duty’ ran during November and December 1943.
