Works in stock Barbara Balmer, RSA, RSW, RGI (1929-2017) was a well-known painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes, interiors and portraits, often of children. She was born in Birmingham and studied art at Coventry School of Art and then at Edinburgh College of Art, and was awarded a travelling scholarship 1951-52 which took her to France and Spain. Barbara Balmer has exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy on many occasions from 1954, and was elected a member. She is also a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours and of the Royal Glasgow Institute. Her work is held in a number of public collections including Aberdeen Art Gallery, Birmingham City Art Galleries, Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. She married the artist George Mackie and lived in Aberdeen for many years, then in Edinburgh, and latterly in Stamford in Lincolnshire

Barbara Balmer died on 31st December 2017, on the 65th anniversary of her marriage to Mr Mackie who survives her. An exhibition of her work is being held at The Fine Art Society in Edinburgh until 29th March 2018.
